It is okay not to be ready. It is important to take your time until you are.

Hello Tomodachi’s,

How are you all in the middle of the first week of 2017? Has anything important or special happen to you in these past few days? As for me, I am still as sick as I was on the first of January but doing just a little bit better. Continue reading

Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing vs. Hybrid Publishing

Hello Tomodachi’s,

What are you all up to? Me? Well, you know, I am doing almost everything under the sun and still would find time to occasionally put some more things on my already quite filled plate. 😀 I like keeping myself busy, so I do not end up becoming idle.

Anyway, today’s post is about the three types of publishing routes writers can take when they are considering publishing their work.

For new authors, it could be especially overwhelming to decide which route is best for you and your (financial) needs and later figuring out which publishing house fits your current situation. I know it was overwhelming for me. I was so overwhelmed with everything that it took me several weeks of reading and getting to understand the publishing industry and the differents routes I could take before actually publishing my first mini poetry collection, I’m Only Human, in January 2016. However, I had a great urge to publish my work at least 2 years before that.

First I will start off with briefly explaining Traditional Publishing. Traditional Publishing is when a book publishing company buys the rights to an author’s manuscript. That means once the manuscript is sold the author does not really hold any more rights to control what happens to his or her book. The book publishing company can, pretty much, do as they please with the book and make whatever changes they deem necessary to make the book become more profitable. Not to mention this an old (and in my opinion outdated) way of publishing books. The advantage of this type of publishing is that pretty much everything is done for you without you having to raise a single finger.

Self Publishing, on the other hand, is the complete opposite to traditional publishing. That means you do not sell your work to the publisher’s but only pay for them to publish your work and you have full control over what happens to your work as well as being able to keep your author’s rights. I choose this route for my publishing my work because of these very reasons. However, as good as this publishing route may sound (yes, there is always a ‘but’ coming) the disadvantage is that it could end up becoming quite expensive because you have to pay for everything you want to be done to your book including marketing. Many self-published authors have to go through the trouble of marketing their own book which determines if a book becomes successful or not. Now let me tell you marketing is not an easy thing to do. Everything can, in some way or form, be an opportunity to promote your book or work. You just have to find or recognise when those opportunities come. That is what marketing is all about.

And last but not least, Hybrid Publishing is a publishing route that makes use of different blends of publishing and marketing elements. It has a combination of both traditional publishing and self-publishing elements.

I would advise people to think and consider very carefully before going into any of publishing routes. It is not easy as it may seem.

Being invited to Vangelis’ new music video release ‘Voor Ons’

Hello, Tomodachi’s,

How are you all? Today’s post I am going to talk about how I was invited by my singer-songwriter friend, Vangelis Sopamena, for the viewing of his new music video ‘Voor Ons’. The viewing was held on Thursday evening in Rotterdam at a cosy gay bar called the FERRY. The starting time of the event had begun at 8 pm, however, due to me being a little late I was unable to see the spoken word opening act to which I regret considering I am also a poet and a writer. Overcoming fears of failure

Hello tomodachi’s,

Good day to you all. Hope you are all doing well. Today’s Thoughts of the Day is about overcoming one’s fears of failure.

As I get older I come to the realisation that sometimes overcoming (fears of) failure is a necessary evil we all must face and overcome in order to succeed. As they say: “Failure either makes you or breaks you.” Continue reading

Challenge accepted!

Hey, you lovely folks. These past few days I have been feeling a little irritable but every day cannot be sunshine and roses, right?

Anyway, on Sunday I was told by my singing coach to write a spoken word poem because he though it would help me with practicing how to sing properly. However, the problem (well, not really a probem) is I have never written a spoken word poem before. I have no experience in this area but I still took the challenge for myself. I have read a couple of my poems when I record myself on camera, but that is nothing compared to spoken word, so this was sort of a new area for me.

I never said I could not write it but I just never tried. It never crossed my mind before to try even though I have posted many spoken word poems on my blog before. Within less than a day my poem somewhat completed. This morning I sent my spoken word poem voice recording to some friends asking for their  feedback. Although, I have never had explicit content in any of my writings, this piece called for it and it might be a smidge explicit for some. So be Warned.

I do intend to share this spoken word one of these days but not at this moment. Once I have perfected it I might share it later.

Well, that is all for today, folks. Have a great day and see you all next time.

Almost anyone can be a writer if they have these 4 essential qualities.

Hello, all you lovely readers and followers. I really appreciate your continued readership and following.

Today my Thoughts of the Day topic will be about telling you all that: almost anyone who has the ambitions of becoming a writer can be a writer if that is what they really want.

After becoming a self-published author of my first poetry collection, I’m Only Human, (and a blogger of Angie’s Inspiration) I realised there are about four essential things all writers should have when venturing into the art of writing and book publishing. These four essential qualities are:

1. Having the confidence to put your work out into the world despite criticism that may arise in the near or distant future. You must always be prepared for criticism.

2. Having the drive to write your book because despite the consensus belief that writing a book is no big deal and is quite easy… think again. It is not easy. Writing your own book can be very hard and tiring. It takes time and consumes most of your time and mental energy.

3. Having a goal or vision for your book is especially important. Why is writing this book so important to you and how will you be conveying that message to your target audience in a way they can relate. So, no, you do not need to be a highly intelligent person to be able to write a book as so many people mistakenly believe. You just need to have a goal and/ or a vision and be convincing enough to convey your story.

4. A writer must have the perseverance to continue writing despite the past or future failures or if your work does not catch on to the general public right away. Writing,  like any other profession, takes a lot of time and you will need the will of steel to continue writing. You will not end up becoming a J.K Rowlings overnight because not even J.K. Rowlings became what she is today overnight. She also had a lot of publishers reject her work in the very beginning. Not to mention, writing books can be quite mentally gruelling. And not having your work recognised after all of the hard work you put into it can also be quite depressing. Especially, considering the literary sector is steadily growing smaller and smaller because in this advancing world of technology images and videos are becoming more and more the norm.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog post if even just a little. If you have more to add to the list please post them in the comment section below. I would be very happy to read what you have.

Have a great day and see you all next time.
