A creative person’s mind

Hello, readers and followers. Have you ever wondered what it is like in the minds of creative people or writers? These images below sum it up pretty well, I can attest to that! And just imagine trying to explain yourself, that would be another hassle in and of itself. This is why I would find it a little hard when trying to logically explain myself to others. Don’t you agree? Or, is it different for you?  Continue reading

Enjoying a nice weekend BBQ with some friends!

Bueños dias todos. Are you all enjoying the last few weeks of summer vacation and trying to soak up the last of those summer rays? I was not able to do much for this summer vacation due to some personal circumstances but I got to enjoy myself quite a bit on Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon I attended a nice Summer BBQ gathering with some friends. Some of these friends were old friends, acquainted friends and even new friends I met for the very first time that day. Everyone contributed a little something to make the BBQ enjoyable. It was great! I was able to enjoy at least some parts of my not-so-eventful summer vacation over on the weekend. Continue reading

Another Poetry and Music

Hello, everyone. I bring you another Sound Cloud poetry reading I like to call Poetry and Music. I posted my first Poetry and Music reading about three to four weeks ago and thought it has been long enough for me to do another reading.

Although the poem I am reading, Friend…less, has already been posted on my blog some time ago, I decided to do a reading alongside music that I thought best fit with my poem. This poem can also be found in my published poetry book, I’m Only Human. I hope you liked it and I will see you all again next time. Take care.

Colourism

Hello everyone and good evening.

As some of you may already know Wednesdays is the day I usually like to pick a topic that interests or inflames me and I write about it. This, in a sense, has become therapeutic for me because this is how I relieve myself by typing out all of my thoughts and feelings I am experiencing in that point in time. However, I am thinking of possibly changing my Opinionated Wednesdays and its content from now on. I am still figuring out this thing called blogging, so please be patient with me. But if you like my Opinionated Wednesday posts and would like me to continue, then please let me know below in the comment section.

Anyway, a couple of days ago I came across some comments that made me want to write this blog post because I think it is important. After reading a particular manga some commentators were calling other commentators out, saying that they were being too sensitive and always crying racism when it was not necessary. Well, I beg to differ. Those who are not ‘coloured’ or ‘people of coloured’ as they like to say will never know and understand the experiences of black people and other people of colour because they cannot see things from our perspective. Most will forever be oblivious to the hardships we face and then tell us later that we are being ‘oh, too sensitive’ but they will never think of themselves as being too insensitive. It will always be us being ‘too sensitive’ and we have to ‘lighten up a little’.

Let us take for example the entertainment industry. How often do we see more than one or two black people or people of colour (e.g. Asians, Hispanics) play in movies, television shows etc. without them being portrayed negatively or stereotypically? Do these black people or people of colour get as much screen time and get to say as many lines as the rest? Do they even get to survive until the end of the show, movie or series?  In scary movies how often have we seen the only black person in the entire show getting killed off first? Not to mention do these same actors who are black or people of colour get nominated and awarded during Oscar Awards and how often are they awarded?

I am honestly tired of seeing how black people are portrayed in the media. Whenever, we do see a black person (or person of colour) in the media they are almost always portrayed the same way. If a black person is not portrayed as a gang banger, they are portrayed as drug dealers, or prisoners in jail, a slave or the white main character’s supposed best friend who we barely get to see or a broke poor person barely making ends meet.

In the music industry it is pretty much the same thing. We only have to look at [Lil’] Kim to see what discrimination and colourism has done to her. She admitted to a reporter in the early 2000s that she was cheated on time and time again by [black] men for the lighter or European looking women. So, there is no surprise that she ended up changing herself because of all of this pressure to look lighter or whiter. That goes to show that this is a problem even within the black community. I guess that is to be expected after being force fed this ‘white is right‘ nonsense our entire lives via the media and peers.

Moving on, let us talk about the fashion industry. How often do you see black people or people of colour do the catwalk on the fashion run way? Sure, there are a few but I am sure some companies have done so as not for others to complain how there are no black people or people of colour on their team. Or how often do you see the black models or models of colour plastered on billboards, flyers, posters, bus stops, store windows, shopping websites and literally everywhere as opposed to a white person? I have noticed that even a lot of websites that sell (female) clothing do not start to show their few black models or people of colour wearing their clothes until around the third page. You would be very lucky to see one [dark skinned] black person on the second page of a [clothing] website. The Free People’s website is a good example of this. Even though they apparently like to culture appreciate when making their clothing and accessories but they never use people from the culture where they got their inspirations from to model their clothing.

In addition, let us not forget the job market. The chances of a black person getting turned down for a job they are more or less qualified for is higher than not. Especially if they have a ‘black sounding name’, forget about it.

Also when dating is involved some studies have shown that black people and Asian men have a much harder time trying to date online than any other race. We have so many things stacked against us as a race that it is not even funny. Let us be honest here. In this world and white [or light] skinned praising society many view darker skin negatively. Even my lovely anime and manga is sometimes guilty of this. That is just how it is. But I want to know why?

Anyway, thank you all for reading. And to repeat what I have written above, this may possibly be my last Opinionated Wednesdays post I will be  making. However, if you like reading these types of posts and would like me to continue with them, please let me know in the comment section below.

Take care and have a great day.

I have really come to like Japanese (and some Korean) dramas

Hey everyone. How are you all? Today I am going to be writing just a short post about my new found interest in watching Japanese dramas and Korean movies respectively.

I am a little curious of how many of you all are interested in Asian dramas and movies (Japanese, Korean, Thai etc.)? Only recently have I started getting a real interest in watching Japanese and Korean dramas. I have watched a few Japanese, Korean and Thai dramas and movies in the past but I am an all loving anime fan and I do not really strayed far away from it. However, nowadays I find myself watching and listening to more and more Asian entertainment, most of which is Japanese and Korean.

When I tell my friends and my new acquaintances that I generally watch or listen to things not related at all to American entertain, I usually get a strange and confused look. As if they are silently asking me with their eyes “Why would you ever be interested in anything but American entertainment, especially when you are an English speaker?” Have any of you Asian entertainment fans ever experienced this? But YES, I do enjoy Japanese and Korean entertainment and I cannot tell you the last time I really watched any American entertainment. All I can truly say is that Asian entertainment is just as enjoyable as American television. Maybe even more so than not. You just probably have to get use to their kind of humour.

Anyway, on Saturday I decided to watch a Japanese drama series, Nobunaga Concerto, which is an adaption from the Nobunaga Concerto anime and manga series. If you are a person who are somewhat acquainted with Japanese manga, anime or dramas, somewhere along the line you must have come across the name Nobunaga. He is quite the renowned character in Japanese history. He was a warlord of the Oda Clan when Japan was not unified as it is now. Japan was separated into several states and these states were ruled over by various clansmen. During those times it was called the Warring States Era. Nobunaga was the man who had the dream of ending wars by unifying Japan and he went through hell and back to make that dream a reality. Before it was practically stolen from under him (because he was betrayed and killed by his own retainer) before he could fully complete his dream.

The drama pretty accurately follows the historical events that occur during Nobunaga’s reign. However, the story is not 100% non-fiction. The story starts off with a male high school student, Subaru, who gets thrown back in time to the warring states regime. When he first time travels to this foreign land he meets his doppelganger who is the real Nobunaga fleeing from his duties and out of harms way. So they end up trading places. Anyway, to make a long story short, Subaru, who pretends to be Nobunaga in the real Nobunaga’s stead, has to find his way in this new world and learn how to lead this clan members into a better future where everyone can smiling happily and will no longer have to suffer from the countless raging wars. In my opinion, a lot of wars could have been prevented if people back then did not betraying each other left right and centre; and if some of the good rulers were not swayed by evil, heartless people who were only looking out for themselves and not the well being of the people.

I enjoyed the series a lot and found it quite comedic and emotional at the same time. I would definitely recommend this drama for those of you interested in watching Japanese dramas. If you have not done so already.

Anyway, I hope you liked this post and I will see you all next time. Take care.

Fun Facts about Angie’s Inspiration

Hello everyone. Today I wanted to do something a little different this Friday instead of writing my usual Writing Related posts. A few days ago on Instagram I was tagged and challenged by a blogger friend of mine, to share some fun facts about myself. So, I decided to just re-sharing it right here on my blog. Or if you want you can also just visit my angies_inspiration Instagram page to see the actual post and do not forget to give me a like and a follow! 🙂

Some Fun Facts:

#1. I had never been to an amusement park before until early this year when I went with a good friend of mine for New Years Day. Which you can imagine, I was like an adult child, lol.

#2. As a young child I never had any intention of becoming a writer. I wanted to be many things such as a nun, boxer, a baseball player, and a mechanic, but the idea of becoming a writer never came to mind.

#3. In primary school I got into a physical altercation with one of my teachers. I was quite sensitive back then when others offended me.

#4. I was very shy growing up. You would have never guessed that, huh? Lol.

#5. When I was in third grade I shaved off all of my eyebrows as a joke.

Is anyone else up for the Fun Facts challenge? Then please take the time to write your comments below. Take care.
